Gartner's scenarios for human–AI collaboration at work

Gartner outlines four realistic scenarios for how AI and humans will work together by 2028–2029 — from AI-assisted roles to fully AI-driven business units — urging leaders to prepare for all possible futures.

At the recent European Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo in Barcelona, analysts presented a forward-looking framework for how AI and humans may work together in the future.

They predict that while AI won't trigger a jobs apocalypse, the period around 2028–2029 will bring significant disruption, with more than 32 million jobs expected to be reshaped each year.

Gartner’s key advice? Rather than betting on a single future, companies should prepare for four distinct scenarios, depending on how much work changes and how much responsibility shifts between humans and AI.

Humans Fill the Gaps
AI handles a large part of the workload, but human workers remain in control and pick up where AI can't perform. Tasks stay largely the same, but AI amplifies productivity.

AI-First, Few Humans
Work is transformed, and only a small number of humans remain—mostly to oversee or deal with edge cases that AI can’t manage fully.

Augmented Work, Human-Driven
Humans work together with AI, using it to do more, be more efficient, and focus on creative or strategic tasks. Work stays somewhat familiar, but it's significantly enriched.

Autonomous Business Units
Parts—or even entire departments—run with little to no human supervision, with AI systems acting as primary decision-makers or executors.

Gartner stresses that preparing for all four futures is essential. The value of organizations will increasingly depend not just on how many people they employ but on how well humans and AI collaborate.
